TheWallSL.com – Vietnam Memorial on the Second Life Grid From the TheWallSL.com site:

TheWallSL.com a destination and companion site for interactive virtual replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that resides in the main Second Life “Grid”. A fundamental purpose behind this Second Life build was to help provide a form of accessibility for those who are unable to experience the real life memorial due to time constraints, insufficient means or ability. In addition, we endeavored to communicate the history and existence of this significant memorial to current and future generations in an innovative and relevant manner.

In making The Wall SL one goal was to concentrate on replicating a memorial of respect, without political focus; and, in consequence to demonstrate how 3D environments can help teach, educate, and hopefully spark reflective thought in people regardless of culture. Memorials serve an important function in any society. They help us remember, teach important life lessons, and are evocative places to meditate and reflect. Memorials also instruct those, by virtue of age, who were not directly touched by an event.

Virtual environments hold great potential, giving veterans (and others) with traveling concerns or mobility issues the opportunity to participate and share in an otherwise inaccessible experience. Whilst it is impossible to truly capture the perfect essence and emotional power of the real life Vietnam Memorial, it is our expectation that this project will provide a catalyst for people not only to remember and honor those who died and the families who lost loved ones, but also to instill a desire to learn more about history.

A common question we field is:
How do I make machinima or "make Second Life Videos"?

First- practice, practice, practice. The client has a built in video recorder, but it fairly clumsy and you will need a PC with some punch to do it effectively.

For a nominal fee you can reduce the difficulty curb and learning time using the video from this merchant who offers a menu-driven HUD the avatar wears to make machinima.

The tool allows you to make movies in the Second Life world (metaverse) and export them to sites like Second Life Video or any site- even You Tube. It is a great way to get exposure for your product or service or to educate, teach or simply film breaking virtual news or cool events.

Tagging is an important function that helps search engines, and other services "find" videos. Think of it as meta data. Tagging is very easy to do, and it gets quick as you go along.

When reviewing a video simply select the Tag option- now brainstorm some ideas on what or how you might describe it with "tags".

Keep in mind that two words in a tag should be kept apart with an underscore. e.g. Second Life is Second_Life or it could be SecondLife. Second_Life is probably best, but you can use all.

It might also be another spelling alltogether. e.g. 2nd Life is 2nd_Life or 2nd+Life!

The video sample I used was very informative with much dialogue with a number of tags based on the interview conversation. This is quite in-depth- you don't have to go that deep, but it helps people find the videos they really want.

- Always keep each tag apart with a comma.

Example: Ogg_Theora, Philip_Rosedale, Philip_Linden, massively_multi-player_experience, MMPE, metaverse, Second_Life, Second_Life_Community_Convention, GETV, Irina_Slutsky, Eric_RIce, Spin_Martin, Varna_McLean, second_life_fashion, SL_Economy, avatar_fashion,Linden_Lab, 2nd_Life, SLCC, Eric Rice, 3D_World, gaming, irinaslutsky, lindenlab, philiplinden, philiprosedale, video_gaming, gaming_revenue, virtual_social_networks, Vandas_Pocket_Park, virtual_landscaping, terraforming, virtual_sailing, sims

These are the rags for this video on the interview with Philip Linden.

Soon you will be able to redirect or shorten SLV videos with the
TinySL service that is combined with the SLTweets Twitter Research HUD. Check it all out this weekend in the upcoming Silicon Island technology show...
